Each writer comes across some self-doubt along the way. Experienced or amateur, below is a list of obstacles that writers must overcome in order to create. Any of these ring a bell?
- Doubt
- Procrastination
- Stress
- Perfectionism
- Laziness
- Anger
- Jealousy
The only way to overcome is to face each of these obstacles head on. There is no short cut to get it done, but I can provide little tricks that will make it easier.
- Utilize Every Minute. You need to take advantage of every spare moment you have to finish your book. There is never a right time to compose a novel. You will never have those extra minutes just looming around. You have to create during chaos. You have to make the time and effort in order for it happen.
- Don’t Edit While You Write. Write when you feel inspired and don’t stop until you feel like you have gotten it all out. Once you get your thoughts spinning in your head you need to stop what you’re doing and write them down, even if it’s chicken scratch notes. You can always go back and edit later.
- Use Google for Spelling. Google is much more up to date than Word.
If you want to write a book, you can. But the first step is getting the words out. Just the idea of it can be overwhelming and stressful—which is why many people who want to write a book don’t. While enjoying these years, students should be developing the right mindset to achieve the success they desire in the future. In order for success to happen, for students to have that lifestyle they often speak of wanting, they must become adults with a solid, results-based work ethic. Wasting these four years can’t be a part of the plan. By using their time in high school to build the right actions for a successful lifestyle, students can ensure themselves a bright future, no matter the obstacles they will encounter. Work Ethic is for the high school student expecting to live life successfully, and is willing to do the right growth actions to shape a lifestyle of fulfillment, fun, and results.

I composed my second and third books in small chunks writing everywhere you could imagine. I used the notepad app on my iPhone. I even bought a fifty dollar Bluetooth keyboard so I can easily sit and write when I’m inspired. Once I’m done with my thoughts I email it to myself so when I get home, it’s waiting in my inbox. Then I copy and paste it into a Word document and clean it up.
